JM Artists to Tour Commercial Arts Centers Thanks to JMArts Contributors

SILER CITY, N.C. — About 20 Jordan-Matthews High School art students will tour two regional arts centers next month to explore examples of locally produced commercial art and experience demonstrations of how the art is created and marketed.

The daylong tour on November 18 is offered entirely free to students by JMArts.

The first stop will be Starworks Glass in Star, a nonprofit arts center built around studios hosting artists from around the world working in glass, metal and ceramics. The center also offers public viewing, intensive workshops and a full-service coffee shop, taproom and live-music venue.

After lunch provided by JMArts contributors, students will visit Carolina Bronze Sculpture in Seagrove, a bronze foundry with commercial clients around the world. The foundry works from concept through casting, fabrication and installation to provide create fine-art, bronze sculptures using traditional techniques along with in-house, state-of-the-art digital tools.

“One of our goals is to help visual art students learn about the wide variety media and techniques that artists use to make a living,” said JMArts president Rose Pate. “We want students to understand all of the opportunities available to them — not just in large cities, but in thriving arts businesses close to home.”
